Mondie, Brown sit out while nursing injuries

Another starting offensive lineman sat out of Saturday’s scrimmage and a senior safety did for the second consecutive week, but Arkansas State Coach Blake Anderson insisted neither injury was serious.

Center Devin Mondie watched Saturday’s scrimmage while he finishes up a mandated concussion protocol, and safety Cody Brown watched while nursing an injured knee. Brown wasn’t on a crutch like he was during last week’s scrimmage and Anderson said both should be ready for when ASU begins preparation for Toledo on Wednesday or Thursday.

Backup center Brandon Berg, who has missed time with an ankle injury, should return by then, too. With Mondie out, senior guard Austin Moreton played center, while redshirt freshman Dalton Ford, who filled in for Colton Jackson last week, played right guard. Jackson worked at left guard.

“That’s moved other guys around in pretty uncomfortable positions, but that could happen in the season just as easy,” Anderson said. “Now is a good time as any to find out how we’re going to get through a game if a guy or two goes down.”

Wide receiver Chris Murray, who broke his ankle in April’s final spring scrimmage, took live snaps for the first time Saturday.
