Driver killed when car runs off highway in Arkansas, goes airborne, hits tree

A Louisiana woman died Monday after her car went airborne and crashed into a tree in southern Arkansas, authorities said.

Betty Palmer, 82, of Springhill, La., was driving a 1998 Mercury south on U.S. 371 in Taylor at 12:45 p.m. when the car left the road, Arkansas State Police said in a report. The car then hit a culvert and went airborne before striking a tree, the report added.

Palmer died in the wreck. A passenger, Thomas Palmer, 58, who is also from Springhill, La., was hurt in the crash and taken to Springhill Medical Center.

The Arkansas State Police report listed conditions as cloudy and dry when the wreck occurred.

Betty Palmer's death was the 334th fatality on state roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
