Hit-and-run hurts Fort Smith cyclist

A 34-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized with multiple injuries after being hit Thursday morning by a car whose driver fled the scene, Fort Smith police said.

Officers were called to the 3100 block of Wheeler Avenue about 5 a.m Thursday, where they found James Price injured.

Police said surveillance footage from a nearby business shows the hit-and-run occurred at 4:54 a.m. Price was riding his bicycle south on Wheeler Avenue in the outside lane, according to a news release.

A small car, possibly a Volkswagen Beetle, was behind him, according to the news release. The car struck Price and drove away. Price was taken to a hospital with a concussion, a broken scapula and other injuries, police said.

The release states that the vehicle involved may have damage to its passenger side panels, mirror and windshield.
