Arkansas inmate dies after being found unresponsive in cell

An Arkansas prison inmate serving a 10-year sentence for theft of property died shortly after being found unresponsive Tuesday, according to the state Department of Correction.

Grady Demery, 32, was found around 5:30 a.m. that morning in his cell at the Grimes Unit in Jackson County, said department spokesman Solomon Graves in a statement.

He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. Graves said Demery was alone at the time of his death.

"Per policy, Arkansas State Police was notified and is conducting an investigation into the death," Graves said.

Court records show Demery was ordered in September 2015 to serve 10 years in prison as part of a plea agreement on charges stemming from the July 2010 robbery of a Pizza Pro restaurant in Cabot.

The Grimes Unit is about 4 miles northeast of Newport off Arkansas 384.

Additional information regarding Demery's death was not immediately available.
