VIDEO: Man gets doused with barbecue sauce, pickles at Arkansas restaurant

A Pennsylvania man braved the Arkansas heat on the latest stop on his 50-state mission, allowing himself to be doused with an icy mixture of barbecue sauce and pickle slices, all for a good cause.

That cause, the ALS Association — which raises awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease — brought longtime volunteer Larry Kaplan to Whole Hog Cafe in Little Rock’s Riverdale area.

His campaign comes a year after millions of dollars was raised by participants of an Internet stunt for ALS research, dubbed the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” which only required ice water.

Outside the restaurant, Kaplan and two other volunteers readied themselves for a cold shower of items that he said best represented the food culture of Arkansas.

At each stop, he said, the state’s most recognized symbols are in play when deciding what will be poured on him from a large red bucket.

Kaplan said that as uncomfortable as it may be for him to be drenched in some of the oddest mixtures, including salmon heads in Alaska, the experience pales in comparison to what ALS patients and their families go through daily.

“I’ve taken off 30 days of my life to do this, and at the end of my 30 days I get to go back to my normal life,” he said. “When you’re diagnosed with ALS, you don’t go back to your normal life. That is your normal life.”

Wednesday’s stop in Little Rock was Kaplan’s 39th of 50 planned destinations across the U.S. and marked day No. 24 on the road, he said.

“No matter how large of a check I could write, it wouldn’t be enough,” he said. “This is my only way I can think of to try and help out.”
