In all likelihood, the last opportunity to cross the Broadway Bridge over the Arkansas River between Little Rock and North Little Rock will be the morning of Sept. 28, after which 25,000 motorists will have to find another way to cross the river.
Beginning on that date, the 93-year-old bridge will be dismantled and a new bridge will be built in its place, according to state highway officials. If all goes according to plan, the new bridge will open to traffic within six months.
"There's a lot that can happen in five weeks, but we're confident as can be at this point that Sept. 28 is a good date for the bridge to be closed," said Scott Bennett, the director of the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.
