Man accused in UCA rape case released without charges after arrest, prosecutor says

A man who was accused of raping a student at the University of Central Arkansas was released from jail without charges after he was arrested earlier in August, the county prosecutor said.

In a statement, 12th Judicial Prosecutor Cody Hiland said paperwork submitted to a judge by UCA police did not provide enough cause to detain the man accused of the crime.

“The information provided to the court contained insufficient evidence to justify detaining [the man] and the court released him from custody without charges,” Hiland said in the statement. “In response, the UCA Police Department submitted an investigative file to our office for a formal review. We are currently in the process of reviewing the evidence related to the allegations and at this time consider the matter an ongoing investigation."

The man, who UCA police listed as a student in an incident report, was booked into the Faulkner County jail on Aug. 9 and released on Aug. 10, Arkansas Online previously reported. When reached by phone for comment, Hiland said the man was arrested “and then released with no charges.”

Hiland said his office will continue to investigate, which will include interviewing the victim. The investigation will help determine if the man will face any charges.

UCA police responded to a reported rape at 9:03 p.m. on Aug. 8 at 270 Farris Road, the incident report said. The UCA police incident log listed New Hall, a dormitory on campus, as the call’s location.
