Reed improves Cup chances, opens 2-shot lead at Barclays

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Patrick Reed had a fast start and hung on against tough Bethpage Black for a 3-under 68 and a two-shot lead in The Barclays.

His spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team is looking better with each round, and so are his prospects for getting his first victory of the year. He sandwiched a birdie around two bogeys at the end to keep his distance over Emiliano Grillo and Rickie Fowler, who each shot 69.

David Lingmerth (Arkansas Razorbacks) and Bryce Molder (Conway) did not make the cut.

CHAMPIONS

Sauers, Triplett lead

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. -- U.S. Senior Open champion Gene Sauers eagled the par-5 18th hole Friday for a 7-under 65 and a share of the Boeing Classic lead with Kirk Triplett.

Coming off his breakthrough victory two weeks ago in Ohio, Sauers, 54, played the four par-5 holes in 5 under with 1 eagle and 3 birdies.

Glen Day (Little Rock) was tied for 12th after a 3-under 69. John Daly (Dardanelle, Arkansas Razorbacks) had a 1-under 71. Mike Grob (Razorbacks) shot a 2-over 74.

Pair out front

Ted Potter Jr. and Jack Maguire shared the lead Friday at 11-under 131 at the Web.com Portland Open at North Plains, Ore.

Potter shot a second-round 10-under 61. Maguire had a 6-under 65.

Tyler Duncan is alone in third, one stroke back. Zack Fischer (Little Rock) is tied for fourth at 9 under after a 68.

Tag Ridings (Arkansas Razorbacks) is 5 under after a 68. Austin Cook (Jonesboro, Razorbacks) was 2 under after a 69.

Scott Gardiner (Farmington) and Matt Atkins (Henderson State) did not make the cut.

LPGA

Jutanugarn by 3

Ariya Jutanugarn shot an 8-under 64 on Friday to take a three-stroke lead at the Canadian Pacific Women's Open at Calgary, Alberta.

Jutanugarn was at 12-under 132.

In Gee Chun and Stephanie Meadow were tied for second at 9-under 135.

First-round leader Chella Choi shot a 1-under 71 and fell into a tie for fourth at 8-under 136.

Gaby Lopez (Arkansas Razorbacks) is tied for 14th after shooting a 5-under 67 (138). Stacy Lewis (Razorbacks) is tied for 20th after an even-par round of 72 (139).

EUROPEAN

Dredge leads

FARSOE, Denmark -- Wales' Bradley Dredge shot a 5-under 66 in windy conditions to take a three-stroke lead in the Made In Denmark tournament.

Dredge had a 13-under 129 total at Himmerland after opening with a 63.

Sweden's Joakim Lagergren was second after a 70.

South Africa's Richard Sterne (67) and Belgian Ryder Cup hopeful Thomas Pieters (71) were 9 under. Pieters matched the course record with a 62 in the first round.
