Police said Daniel Teyhen was stabbed multiple times Friday at 902 Caudle Ave. in Springdale. He survived and was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Springdale.

Early Friday, she was stabbed to death, and police said her son was responsible.

Dustin Glenn Price, 28, was arrested Friday on two counts of capital murder, first-degree battery, residential burglary and terroristic threatening on a police officer, all felonies. He also faces misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault.

He is also accused of killing his stepfather and attacking someone who lived in his building.

Price was being held late Friday at the Washington County jail with no bail set.

About 2:30 a.m. Friday, Price broke into his parents' home at 2306 Sandy St. and fatally stabbed James and Theresa Hendershot, according to a news release from the Springdale Police Department.

Price then went to his home at 902 Caudle Ave., where he stabbed 52-year-old Daniel Teyhen, the release said.

Police said Theresa Hendershot, 47, died at her home from what appeared to be knife wounds. The injured James Hendershot, 47, was taken to Northwest Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Teyhen was listed Friday in good condition at Northwest Medical Center, according hospital spokesman Pat Driscoll.

Police reportedly had wrapped up their investigation at the Hendershot home by 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Price's brother Kendall, along with some friends, were removing items from the home Friday morning after the police had finished their work there.

Richard Carr, who lives at 2304 Sandy St., said police were in the neighborhood from about 2 a.m. to at least 7:30 a.m.

Carr said he often had seen Theresa Hendershot walking around the neighborhood.

Price has a history of criminal activity that includes assault, battery and threatening that dates back to 2007, court documents show.

Also, he was committed to the State Hospital more than once, and court records show that he was released from there in June.

Court documents also show that Price was detained in the Benton County jail for at least three months in 2012 as he waited for a bed to become available in the State Hospital.

In 2014, Price wrote a letter asking Benton County Circuit Judge Brad Karren to order his release from jail because he had been without his medication while in the lockup. Price wrote that without his medications, he was susceptible to another "psychotic episode." Karren released him a couple of weeks later.

Nancy Kahanak, coordinator for Judicial Equality for Mental Illness, said resources for police are scarce when it comes to accommodating the mentally ill. The group is working to change the state's system of treating the mentally ill.

"If we had more services for people with mental illnesses, we would hopefully catch some of these issues," Kahanak said.

After a court-ordered examination in 2012, Price was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, records show.

Schizoaffective disorder is a blend of typical schizophrenia symptoms, such as seeing or hearing things that aren't real, with a mood disorder like depression or manic behavior, according to the Mayo Clinic and the National Alliance on Mental Health.

The disorder can be managed with therapy and medication, according to the health care groups.

But, left untreated, as with other mental illnesses, it can lead to substance abuse or other problems, the groups state.

Its causes aren't known, although genetics and stress are among factors that contribute to it, the groups say, and LSD use has been linked to the disorder.

According to court documents, Price has a history of substance abuse, including marijuana and opioid use.

Police said they went Friday to the Hendershot home on Sandy Street after Theresa Hendershot called 911 and said her son had stabbed her husband.

When they arrived, police said, they found Theresa and James Hendershot on the floor. Both were unresponsive and had stabbing and blunt-force-trauma injuries, according to police.

Officers found a small knife and an aluminum bat covered in what appeared to be blood, the police report said.

Dispatch records Friday morning show that Fayetteville police were alerted to be on the lookout for Price.

Price was located later Friday morning riding a moped in Fayetteville and was arrested without incident, according to a preliminary arrest report. Some weapons were found on the moped, the report said.

After his arrest, the report said, Price lunged at detectives who were interviewing him at the Springdale Police Department and said he would kill them.

In 2014, Price assaulted a deputy at the Benton County jail, court documents show. However, he was acquitted of related charges after a psychologist found that he had a mental disease and didn't have the capacity "to appreciate the criminality of his conduct," court documents show.
