News and notes

• Pitcher Hasten Freeman (Arkansas-Fort Smith/Subiaco Academy) signed Tuesday to pitch for the independent Sioux City Explorers of the American Association. Freeman pitched for the Peninsula Oilers in the Alaska Baseball League, a developmental league, and one of his coaches had ties with a coach on the Explorers' staff. A couple of injuries and a player acquired by an MLB team left the Explorers in need of a pitcher, so Freeman got the call. He made his debut for the Explorers on Thursday in a 12-8 loss to the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Canaries. Freeman faced 9 batters over 12/3 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 1 strikeout.

• Outfielder Forrestt Allday (Central Arkansas) was promoted to Class AAA Salt Lake City from the Los Angeles Angels' rookie league team in Orem, Utah, on Aug. 20. He has played in four games for the Bees, going 2 for 14 (.143) in a series against the El Paso Chihuahuas (AAA Padres).
