Chief set to retire from Animal Control

Billy Grace, longtime director of the city's Animal Control Department, announced last week in a letter to Mayor Joe Smith that he will retire as of Sept. 9.

Grace has been a city employee for 41 years. He spent the first 20 years with the Police Department. He then headed up the Animal Control Department and animal shelter in Burns Park for the past 21 years.

Grace is 67. He said in an interview Friday that he plans to tend to his cows on his farm and spend time with his grandchildren during retirement.

In his letter to the mayor, Grace wrote about his appreciation to city officials for being "so supportive of our efforts during my tenure" at Animal Control.

Smith told the City Council that Grace had planned to leave a year earlier, but Smith convinced him to stay another year.

Competition opens to all art teachers

The entry period is now open for Arkansas art teachers to apply to be part of the William F. Laman Public Library System's second annual Juried Arkansas Art Teacher Exhibition that will begin in November.

The exhibition will be Nov. 18-Dec. 10 at the system's Argenta Branch Library Gallery, 420 Main St.

It is open to all Arkansas art educators, including K-12, higher-education instructors and retired art teachers. Applicants can submit a maximum of two works for consideration. The entry deadline is midnight Oct. 28.

Guy Bell, owner of DRAWL Gallery in Little Rock, will be the juror. Bell is to select works that will be displayed at the exhibition and will choose three top works to receive awards and monetary prizes, according to a Laman Library System news release.

An opening reception will be 5-8 p.m. Nov. 18, coinciding with November's Art Walk.

Online entry forms and other information, including fees, are available by emailing rachel.trusty@lamanlibrary.org.
