Deputies were approaching a residence on Waldo Drive at 10:47 p.m. after a neighbor reported hearing a shotgun blast when Robert Eugene Baird fired on deputies, according to the news release.

One officer suffered bleeding and a bruise on his forehead. Other officers responded, and Baird was arrested without further incident.

"I am so grateful that the officers were not more seriously injured," Pope County Sheriff Shane Jones said. "This was a bad situation that very easily could've turned into a tragedy.

"Each day our officers face situations that may turn deadly at any moment. Thankfully, their training and quick action enabled them to return home to their families at the end of their shift," he said.

Baird, 37, was taken to the Pope County jail, where he remained Monday in lieu of $150,000 bond, authorities said.

He faces charges of aggravated assault on an officer, felon in possession of a firearm, public intoxication, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, the report stated.

Paschel Harrison Waldo, 70, of Dover also was arrested at the residence and charged with public intoxication and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
