Family: Empathy through books

The news is frightful sometimes, with shootings, terror attacks, a nasty presidential campaign full of vitriol and more. And talking with children about these events can be difficult.

But these aren’t events to ignore or gloss over; children are noticing things aren’t quite right in the world.

One thing holds true: Reading to children from books that emulate how they should understand the world can show them how to be part of the solution. And children can learn empathy and kindness from books.

Find an abundance of stories that provide comfort, show kids how they can be strong and allow them to realize that all’s not perfect in the world but that they can make it better in this Wednesday’s Family section.
