Grichuk gives Cardinals lead in win against Brewers

MILWAUKEE — Zach Duke stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout in the 10th inning after Randal Grichuk hit an RBI single in the top half of the inning, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Seung Hwan Oh (4-2) pitched out of a jam in the ninth to get the win. Duke got his first save with the Cardinals by entering to strike out pinch-hitter Manny Pina after Matt Bowman walked three batters.

The Cardinals’ Jhonny Peralta led off the 10th with a single off Corey Knebel (0-2) and moved to third on Yadier Molina’s ground-rule double. Jeremy Hazelbaker, who pinch ran for Peralta, scored the winning run on Grichuk’s flare to right.

St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright and Milwaukee’s Wily Peralta dueled for seven innings, leaving a 1-1 game for the bullpens.

Neither team had a hit until the fourth and neither scored until the sixth.

St. Louis’ Jedd Gyorko broke the scoreless tie with a two-out home run in the sixth. The Cardinals have homered in 19 consecutive games, tying a franchise record set in July 2006.

Martin Maldonado’s run-scoring double tied it in the bottom of the inning.

Wainwright retired the first nine batters until Jonathan Villar singled leading off the fourth. Wainwright gave up three hits and one run in seven innings. He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter.

Peralta retired the first nine batters before surrendering a single to Matt Carpenter, who led off the fourth.

Peralta has pitched well since being recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Aug. 8 after struggling earlier in the year. He gave up three hits and one run in seven innings, walking one and striking out a season-high 10. It marked the second time in his career that he reached double digits in strikeouts.

Peralta had not gone more than six innings in a game this season.

The Brewers put two runners on in the ninth, but Oh struck out Chris Carter to end the threat. Milwaukee has lost six straight, all at home.

NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2 Max Scherzer didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning and he was dominant through eight as the Washington Nationals continued their mastery of the Philadelphia Phillies. Scherzer (15-7) allowed three hits and struck out 11 while walking one. He was perfect through the first four innings, striking out five consecutive batters — all swinging — between the second and third innings. Ryan Howard, who got the start despite being 1 for 18 with 11 strikeouts against Scherzer coming in, hit an opposite-field two-run home run in the seventh inning to break up the shutout and pull the Phillies within 3-2. But Scherzer closed the door from there, striking out three more in the seventh and eighth en route to his 15th win of the season.

BRAVES 7, PADRES 3 Julio Teheran won for the first time in 10 starts, rookie Dansby Swanson drove in three runs and the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres. Teheran began the night with the lowest run support in the major leagues, but the two-time All-Star used a rare offensive outburst by Atlanta to earn his first home victory since last Oct. 2, a span of 14 starts. The Braves, who rank last in runs, used six hits to take a 5-0 lead off journeyman Edwin Jackson in a five-run third. Adonis Garcia, Freddie Freeman, Jace Peterson and Swanson had RBI singles. Tyler Flowers added a sacrifice fly. Teheran (4-9) allowed six hits and two runs and struck out eight in seven innings.

METS 7, MARLINS 4 Curtis Granderson came off the bench and homered twice, Jose Reyes had four hits and the surging New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins. Asdrubal Cabrera extended his recent tear at the plate, hitting a two-run homer in his return to the lineup after missing one start due to a sore left knee. Rookie right-hander Seth Lugo (2-2) gave up two runs in the first inning but recovered nicely as the Mets won for the eighth time in 10 games. By winning the first two games of the four-game series, New York (68-64) moved ahead of slumping Miami for second place in the NL East.

CUBS 3, PIRATES 0 Kyle Hendricks threw seven dominant innings to lower the majors’ best ERA to 2.09 and Anthony Rizzo homered to lead the Cubs past the Pittsburgh Pirates for Chicago’s 21st victory in August. Hendricks (13-7) allowed three hits and has given up three or fewer runs in 18 straight starts. He didn’t allow a hit until Gregory Polanco’s bloop to left-center in the fifth and faced the minimum 17 batters until John Jaso’s two-out double in the sixth. Rizzo belted a two-run homer off Chad Kuhl (3-2) in the first and Miguel Montero added an RBI single an inning later as the Cubs improved to 84-47. Carl Edwards Jr. worked the eighth and Aroldis Chapman finished the four-hitter for his 31st save as the Cubs improved to 21-6 this month.

It was just the second career homer for Maile, who drove a 1-2 pitch from Drew Pomeranz out to left to restore the tie after Boston had taken a 3-1 lead. Pomeranz and Tampa Bay starter Jake Odorizzi both pitched well but didn’t factor in the decision as both bullpens struggled to hold a lead. Gattis hit a solo homer in the seventh to make it 3-0. McHugh (9-10) allowed four hits and struck out five. He had allowed at least three runs in each of his previous six starts. Houston remained two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card.
