Courtney Orsby’s 12-yard touchdown reception from Aj Aycock put the Hurricane (1-0) ahead 14-7, which was the score at the end of the first quarter.

Kyler Miles’ interception set up Jonathan Adams’ 47-yard touchdown reception for a 21-7 Jonesboro lead with 10:18 left in the half. Dwight Starks’ interception led to Daishon Fountain hauling in a 24-yard touchdown catch from Aycock with 7:33 remaining, and less than 90 seconds later, Jake Slayton caught a 12-yard touchdown after a Taz Robinson interception for a 35-7 advantage.

After trailing 44-21 at halftime, Batesville cut the its deficit to 44-29 on Kylan Robinson’s 15-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion, but the Pioneers could get no closer.

ALMA 34, VAN BUREN 21

The Alma offense started slow to open the season Tuesday night at Airedale Stadium in Alma, but senior quarterback Noah Dodson got things going in the final quarter.

Van Buren (0-1) pulled within 20-14 with 9:12 left in the game, but Dodson threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to Connor Huff and Felix Wright as the Airedales (1-0) pulled away.

“He is a tough, big kid,” Alma Coach Doug Loughridge said of Dodson. “He is a little more known for his ability to run the ball, but he can throw it and showed improvement.”

Dodson finished 15-of-28 passing for 281 yards with 3 touchdowns.

Van Buren stayed in the game despite fumbling the ball seven times, losing five. One fumble was on the Airedales’ 1-yard line.

“It could’ve been a whole different game,” Van Buren Coach Greg Werner said. “But those turnovers still happened.”

Fullback Josh Aden finished with 111 yards on 23 carries for the Pointers.
