FAYETTEVILLE -- A young man accused of shooting another man outside a Wal-Mart in October pleaded not guilty Friday in Washington County Circuit Court to attempted capital murder and carrying a weapon.

Geovanny Perez-Cruz, 18, of Springdale was given an initial court date of Jan. 27.

Perez-Cruz is accused of shooting 25-year-old Daniel Luna of Springdale in the upper arm at Wal-Mart, 4870 Elm Springs Road in Springdale the night of Oct. 9, a police report said.

Perez-Cruz and Luna were acquaintances, according to police.

An argument between the two began in the store and moved outside to the parking lot, police said. The argument escalated to Perez-Cruz shooting Luna in the parking lot.

Perez-Cruz fled the scene on foot and Luna went back in the store, police said.

Police arrived around 8:15 p.m., and Luna was treated at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville and released.

Police said surveillance footage showed four males arguing. A Hispanic male wearing a two-tone sweater and Nike shoes pulled a gun out of what appeared to be his sweater pocket and shot the victim.

Police said they found the gun used in the shooting.

Perez-Cruz is being held at the Washington County Detention Center with no bond set.
