Predictions of rain, cold alter plans for parades

A weekend forecast of rain and cold has played havoc with scheduled Christmas parades and related festivities.

Little Rock's Big Jingle Jubilee Holiday Parade, which had been set for today, has been rescheduled for 3 p.m. next Saturday. The parade is to begin at Second Street and Broadway, follow Broadway to Capitol Avenue then proceed to the state Capitol.

State government officials announced that the annual Capitol lighting ceremony -- which had been scheduled for 6 p.m. today after the Little Rock parade -- will now be held indoors on the Capitol's second-floor rotunda, and a planned fireworks display has been canceled.

The North Little Rock Sertoma Christmas Parade and Northern Lights Festival, which had been set for Sunday, is being postponed a week until 3 p.m. Dec. 11. The parade is to begin at Pershing Boulevard and Main Street, flow south on Main Street into downtown and end at the North Little Rock City Services Building at 120 Main St. The Northern Lights Festival will begin at 4:30 p.m. outside the City Services Building.

The opening of the "North Little Rock Railroads: Building a City" exhibit is still set for Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the North Little Rock Heritage Center at 506 Main St. The exhibit previously was to open in conjunction with the city's Christmas Parade.

The National Weather Service has forecast possible heavy rain through early next week. A steady drizzle and temperatures in the 40s are expected today.
