State index tracks markets, rises 3.11

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 3.11 to 369.27 Tuesday.

"The major averages closed slightly higher following a choppy session as investors reacted to a flurry of economic releases," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

Shares of ArcBest, J.B. Hunt Transport and Simmons First National again hit 52-week highs.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
