Retiring No. 2

The New York Yankees announced Tuesday morning that they will retire Derek Jeter’s jersey number next May 14, part of a ceremony that also will include the iconic shortstop receiving a plaque in Monument Park. Jeter will become the 22nd player in franchise history to have his number retired and is the first since former teammates Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte had their respective numbers retired during the 2015 season. His No. 2 will be the 21st number retired by the club. Jeter, the team’s first-round pick in 1992 (selected sixth overall), retired after the 2014 season having won five World Series (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009). The 14-time All-Star retired as the franchise leader in hits (3,465), which ranked him sixth on baseball’s all-time list, games played (2,747), doubles (544), stolen bases

(358), at-bats (11,195), singles (2,595) and hit-by-pitches (170). Jeter had eight seasons with at least 200 hits, making him one of two players in franchise history along with Lou Gehrig (eight) with as many as four.

NFL

Colts LB suspended

Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Jackson will be eligible to return to the Colts’ active roster on Jan. 2, a day after the team’s regular-season finale against Jacksonville. The Colts (6-6) are tied for first place in the AFC South with Houston and Tennessee. Jackson also will miss games against Tennessee, Minnesota and Oakland. He has 78 tackles and a sack this season. The suspension was announced on Tuesday. San Francisco finished with just six net yards passing after the weather dictated a heavy reliance on the running game. Gabbert completed four of his 10 attempts for 35 yards and took a safety after the game was out of hand. San Francisco was able to run effectively for the majority of the afternoon, with 141 of the 49ers’ 147 total yards coming on the ground. But Chicago scored three consecutive touchdowns and the 49ers needed to pass to get back into the game.

Packers tackle suspended

Green Bay defensive tackle Mike Pennel has been suspended for the last four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy after serving a four-game ban to start the year. Pennel will be eligible to return if the Packers (6-6) make the playoffs. The team said it wouldn’t comment further on Tuesday’s announcement. Pennel, 25, was an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State-Pueblo in 2014. He started five of the 16 games he played last season. Pennel has played in all eight games he was eligible for this season, collecting five tackles and no sacks. Pennel got his first chance to start last season when defensive tackle Letroy Guion was suspended the first three games following an offseason arrest.
