• The death of a Northwest Arkansas girl in May has led to the formation of a state committee to study school fund-raisers involving door-to-door sales. The state Board of Education also decided Monday to form a committee to study playground safety. "I think these are issues that we need to look at," said Dr. Burton Elliott, director of the state Department of Education. Representatives of Parents Against School Solicitation cited safety concerns when they asked the state to stop schools from allowing children to raise money by door-to-door sales.

• If there's a road in Dallas County that Mike Knoedl hasn't been down, it's brand new. The veteran wildlife officer with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said he probably knows all of the county's residents "and most of the dogs." That knowledge serves him well in enforcing the state's hunting laws. Knoedl and the state's 162 other wildlife officers police the half-million or so licensed hunters and fishermen in Arkansas -- and plenty others who don't bother to get a license or follow the rules. And they stay busy. Wildlife officers across the state issued 729 citations for violating state hunting rules between Oct. 1 and Nov. 29, according to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Knoedl and others say 2006 has been a pretty typical year for wildlife officers. During the same period in 2005, officers issued 702 citations related to deer season.
