Police: Sherwood officer shoots suspect who was trying to get away

A Sherwood police officer shot a suspect who had hit an officer with his car during a police chase Wednesday morning, the Police Department said in a news release.

The chase began a little before 10 a.m. when police were called to the area near the intersection of Whitewood Drive and East Woodruff Avenue on a report of a man following a woman in a car.

The release said the man fled the area when officers arrived. Police gave chase, and a low-speed pursuit ensued until the suspect’s vehicle stopped at a dead-end road.

As officers tried to get the suspect out of the car, he “sped off and struck an officer,” the release said. An officer then shot once into the suspect’s vehicle. The chase went a little farther before police arrested the subject.

The unnamed suspect had been shot but is in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon. The officer who was hit by the car sustained injuries that weren’t life threatening.

The officer who shot at the vehicle was placed on administrative leave, and Sherwood police said they wouldn’t release his name “at this time.” It's unclear if the officer who was hit by the car is the same officer who shot at the car.
