Trainer Jack Van Berg is pointing 3-yearold Cutacorner to the Grade III $500,000 Southwest Stakes on Feb. 15 at Oaklawn, the second leg in the track’s 3-year-old series on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Cutacorner won a first-level allowance/ optional claimer Jan. 21 after finishing fourth in the $250,000 Springboard Mile Stakes on Dec. 13 at Remington Park. … Suddenbreakingnews worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.80 Monday morning at Oaklawn in preparation for the Southwest Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. Suddenbreakingnews, a Mineshaft gelding, will be making his local and 3-year-old debut for trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel. He made all five starts last year at Remington Park. He won the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes on Nov. 6 before concluding his 2-year-old campaign with a runner-up finish, beaten by a nose, in the $250,000 Springboard Mile Stakes on Dec. 13. Von Hemel is also scheduled to start Synchrony in the 1 1/16-mile Southwest. Synchrony finished third in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 18 at Oaklawn. Also working Monday morning toward the Southwest was Z Royal, who covered 5 furlongs in 1:00.40 shortly after the track opened for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. … Luna de Loco worked 5 furlongs in 1:01.60 Tuesday morning for trainer Steve Asmussen, who said he hopes to run the Malibu Moon colt in the Southwest. Luna de Loco finished fourth in the Smarty Jones Stakes. He was beaten by 2¾ lengths after encountering traffic on the second turn under three-time Oaklawn riding champion Ricardo Santana Jr.

FINAL FURLONG

Walter De La Cruz, Oaklawn’s co-second-leading jockey this year, is scheduled to ride today, said his agent, Becky Esch. De La Cruz was unseated near the finish of Sunday’s ninth race, when his mount, You Vow Me, bolted to his left while battling for third place and bounced off eventual third-place finisher Merrymaker. De La Cruz was taken off the track by ambulance, favoring his lower right leg. De La Cruz has won seven races through the first 11 days of racing this year. He was Oaklawn’s 10th-leading rider last year – his first season in Hot Springs – with 20 victories. … Grade 1 winner Nickname, who is scheduled to make her 3-yearold debut in Saturday’s $100,000 Martha Washington Stakes, worked a half-mile in :50.20 Tuesday morning at Oaklawn for Steve Asmussen. … Ornate — the dam of Oaklawn stakes winners On Fire Baby, High Heels and French Kiss — had a filly late last month by 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.
