1 MARDI

It's a tasty, lively party time on Little Rock's South Main Street as the neighborhood hosts a Mardi Gras celebration Saturday. Stores and restaurants start opening in the morning with special sales and activities but the parade itself begins at noon. The Root Cafe's beard-growing contest follows at the Bernice Garden and the Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball starts at 7 p.m. at Villa Marre. Tickets to the ball are $50 but other activities are free. Legendary Memphis soul singer Mavis Staples will help inaugurate Pulaski Technical College's new Center for the Humanities and Arts on the college's Main Campus, 3000 W. 5 MASTERPIECES

A collection of local artists and artisans including Bang-Up Betty, Sally Nixon Illustration, The Simple Perks and Postmodern Press will offer up handmade crafts just in time for Valentine's Day shopping at HeART of the Bar, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at South on Main, 1304 S. 6 MOVING

Thea Foundation's The Art Department, the quarterly young professionals series, welcomes works by painter Angela Davis Johnson with a reception, 6:30-9 p.m. Friday. The reception features heavy hors d'oeuvres, drinks and music by The Funkanites. Admission is $10. "The Wondrous Possibilities of Falling and Flying" continues through February and regular hours at the gallery, 401 Main St., North Little Rock, are 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Monday-Friday with free admission. University of Arkansas at Little Rock faculty members Linda Holzer, pianist, and Ferris Allen, baritone, will premiere Prayers and Blessings by Gwyneth Walker in a recital titled "Ear-Opener! A Celebration of the Known and the New," 7:30 p.m Friday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Fine Arts Building, UALR, 2801 S. University Ave., Little Rock.
