WASHINGTON COUNTY

First Presbyterian Church in Springdale, 100 S. Gutensohn Road, welcomes the Rev. Kris Crawford as transitional pastor during the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday. A reception follows.

The church youth will collect donations for Souper Bowl Sunday to benef it Christians United Pantry in Springdale.

Lenten activities begin with a soup supper at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and a Service of Ashes at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Classes for children and adults will continue at 6:15 p.m. each Wednesday through Lent, with dinner served at 5:30 p.m.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, 225 N. East Ave., presents “The Prison Story Project,” a staged reading of original stories by incarcerated women, at 7:30 p.m. today. Performers include Arianne Ellison, Jenny McKnight, Laura Shatkus and Jonny Schremmer. A reception runs from 7 to 7:30 p.m. A $10 donation is suggested. Nursery care is provided.

After the performance, the church presents a panel discussion on incarceration, storytelling and reentry, moderated by writer Padma Viswanathan. Panelists include the Hon. Cristi Beaumont, Fourth Judicial Circuit; Lauren Copley, University of Arkansas department of sociology and criminal justice; Geffrey Davis, UA department of English; Kathy McGregor, founder and director of Prison Story Project; and Victor Velazquez, formerly incarcerated.

St. Paul’s Friends of Music presents Johna Botes in a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday. A former instructor of piano and organ at the University of Arkansas, Botes now serves as an assistant professor of piano and organ at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. For part of the program, he will be joined by other musicians as well as the UA choral group, Scola Cantorum, and three trumpet players from the university. Donations support Schola Contorum’s concert tour in May to Belgium.

The church presents its annual Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras party, featuring Cajun fare and pancakes at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Tickets are $10, for adults; $5, children; with a $30, maximum per family. The event serves a fundraiser for Robert R. Brown Camps for friends with physical and cognitive impairments. Church youth will present a short retrospective video, followed by a Zydeco dance party for all and the burn palms from last Palm Sunday to be used for ashes the following day.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday services at 7:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m. (with incense), 6:15 p.m. (in Parish Hall), and 7:00 p.m. (with choir and incense) Wednesday. The Rev. Lowell Grisham stands at the sanctuary rail for confessions from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

First United Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, 695 Calvin St., recognizes scouts during worship at 11 a.m. Sunday. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and their leaders are encouraged to wear their uniforms.

The church sponsors a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. An Ash Wednesday service at 6 p.m. Wednesday features the Rev. Libby Lizarraga preaching on “The Fast God Chooses.”

Sunday worship services during Lent will focus on the theme, “How Jesus Makes Us Whole,” from the healing stories in the Gospel of Matthew.

Fayetteville Goddess Festival organizers accept program and workshop proposals until Feb. 15 for the event, which runs March 18-27.

The festival focuses on restoring balance in the word by encouraging exploration of the feminine divine through art, music, words, dance and shared knowledge. Events are held at the Omni Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology and the Fayetteville Senior Activity and Wellness Center.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Rogers, 824 W. Oak St., celebrates Shrove Tuesday with a free pancake supper at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Ash Wednesday services with imposition of ashes are planned for noon and 6 p.m. Wednesday.

First Presbyterian Church in Bentonville, 901 N.E. J St., presents a jazz communion service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. Music includes traditional hymns “with a swing,” as well as music by Duke Ellington, Cannonball Adderly and more performed by a jazz quartet. A Fat Tuesday pancake brunch follows.

The church offers an Ash Wednesday service, with Scripture readings, music and imposition of ashes, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Shepherd’s Food Pantry is stocking products for Easter meals. Organizers ask for donations of sugar-free gelatin and low-sugar canned fruit.

Second St., Bentonville, presents musician Eddie Watkins speaking on “I Heard You the First Time” at 10:30 a.m. He leads a workshop on finding musical affirmation, “I Sing My Prayers,” at 3 p.m. today (An offering of $10 is suggested.), presents a concert at 7 p.m. today.

The prayer team meets immediately after the service Sunday. Participants will meditate on weekly subjects this month at the weekly Wednesday meetings at 7 p.m.

New Life Christian Church, 103 Riordan Road, sponsors the church’s outreach committee in hosting an appreciation luncheon Friday for teachers at Cooper Elementary in Bella Vista.

The Haiti team serves a Valentine’s dinner at 5 p.m. Feb. 13 at Riordan Hall, catered by Papa Mike’s restaurant. Cost is $25 per person, with money used to build a children’s playground at the Haitian Christian Mission School.
