The state Department of Emergency Management is urging residents and business owners to develop an earthquake preparedness plan.

Arkansas marks the start of its annual Earthquake Awareness Week on Sunday.

Arkansas is at risk for high-magnitude, high-impact earthquakes, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Numerous temblors occur every year throughout Arkansas, but most go unnoticed.

Earthquakes have been documented in the state as far back as 1699. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was felt over an area of 174,000 square miles near Marked Tree in 1976.

Dozens of earthquakes have rattled Arkansas' neighbor to the west, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma's earthquakes have been linked to the injection of wastewater underground from oil and gas production. State regulators have recommended reducing the volume or shutting down some of the disposal wells.
