UA's Robinson 1 of 4 finalists for Ohio post

The interim student affairs leader at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville was named Wednesday as one of four finalists to be the top academic officer at the University of Toledo.

If accepted, Charles Robinson, UA's interim vice provost for student affairs, would join Sharon Gaber, who left her job as UA's provost last year to become president of the Ohio university.

In 2013, Robinson was appointed UA's vice chancellor for diversity and community, a position he continues to hold. He was appointed last year to fill in as UA's top student affairs administrator to replace Danny Pugh, who left UA for a similar job at Texas A&M University.

At the time of Robinson's appointment, Provost Ashok Saxena said in a statement that a national search would take place to find a permanent replacement for Pugh.

However, UA spokesman Steve Voorhies said no national search has begun, noting that UA's top leader, Joseph Steinmetz, is still determining the needs of the institution after taking over as chancellor Jan. 1.

Robinson is to travel to the Toledo campus and participate in open forums Feb. 18.

Other finalists for provost are: Christopher Keil McCord, a liberal arts dean at Northern Illinois University; Andrew Hsu, an engineering dean at San Jose State University; and Donald Siegel, a business dean at the University at Albany.

Robinson joined UA in 1999 as a faculty member in the university's history department. Robinson also has led UA's African and African American Studies program.
