Woman posed as humane worker, stole dog

RIO COMMUNITIES, N.M. — A New Mexico couple said a woman posing as an employee of the Humane Society of the United States threatened them with jail and stole one of their dogs.

The woman originally responded to a Criagslist add about buying a dog, Leandra and Angelo Quevedo of Rio Communities, New Mexico, said Thursday. After purchasing a dog, she returned and claimed she was with the Humane Society of the United States.

The couple said the woman told them the society was in the process of charging the Quevedos with more than 70 counts of animal neglect.

The impostor then told the couple that they were required to give her their remaining dog, Angelo Quevedo said.

Court documents show the couple isn't facing any charges.

The Humane Society of the United States says it's investigating the case.
