ASU women break tie, dominate late

ARKANSAS STATE 94, TROY 80

Troy played Sun Belt Conference-leading Arkansas State even for the first 34 minutes of Saturday's game, but the Red Wolves controlled things when it mattered most in taking a 94-80 victory at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.

Troy (10-11, 5-7) and ASU (18-3, 12-0) were tied 71-71 with 5:56 left in the game, but the Red Wolves closed out the Trojans behind a 23-9 run.

Three-pointers by Aundrea Gamble and Jessica Flanery gave the Red Wolves an 84-74 lead with 2:17 left. A Khadija Brown-Haywood free throw gave ASU its largest lead at 89-74 nearly a minute later after layups from Gamble and Brown-Haywood.

Gamble hit three free throws, and Brittany Fowler added two more for the final points for ASU, which has now won 12 consecutive games and 22 in a row in the Convocation Center.

The Red Wolves shot 17 of 29 (58.6 percent) from the field in the second half, including 8 of 13 (61. 5 percent) in the fourth quarter.

The lead changed hands 20 times, including 12 times in the second half.

Troy outscored ASU 38-24 in points in the lane and was led by Ashley Beverly-Kelley's game-high 32 points.

Brown-Haywood scored 21 of her team-high 23 points and had 10 of her game-high 12 rebounds in the second half. Flanery made 6-of-11 three-pointers and finished with 22 points for the Red Wolves, who also received 21 points and a game-high eight assists from Gamble, who played all 40 minutes.

Lauren Bradshaw came off the ASU bench to block 5 shots and grab 8 rebounds in 23 minutes.

Arjae Saunders had 21 points for Troy, which received 11 more from Amanda Mendoza.

ASU led 39-38 at halftime on Flanery's three-pointer with :58 left in the second quarter.
