BAR NIGHT

Class action was discovered at reception for legal eagles

The Arkansas Bar Association hosted an evening reception the first night of its midyear meeting, which takes place in January.

Drinks and light hors d'oeuvres were served up in the Pinnacle Room -- the penthouse space overlooking the river -- of the Little Rock Marriott hotel on Jan. 28.

It was sponsored by Stephens Insurance LLC.

Association president Eddie H. Walker Jr. of Fort Smith welcomed around 150 lawyers, judges and their guests. He and wife Gwen are shortly off to sunny San Diego, where Walker will represent the Natural State at the national conference of bar associations.

The highlight of the evening was a raffle for a $100 Capital Hotel gift card, won not by a lawyer but by KATV, Channel 7, weekend anchor Janelle Lilley, who'd moderated a panel that afternoon.

The association's midyear meeting includes 2 1/2 days of continuing legal education, held at the Marriott and at the Capital Hotel across the street.

Kathleen McDonald of Little Rock was chairman of this year's meeting.
