State and local authorities in southern Arkansas are searching for a man who escaped the Dallas County jail in Fordyce at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, an official at the Dallas County sheriff's office said.

Authorities said 38-year-old Paul Grice made it to Drew County before they realized he was missing at about 2:30 a.m. It was not revealed how he escaped.

Drew County and Arkansas Department of Correction deputies are looking for Grice in the Monticello area.

Grice was awaiting transfer to the Arkansas Department of Correction after convictions on theft and firearms charges. Prison records show he was convicted of second-degree murder in 1990s, and officials said he is considered dangerous.

Grice is described as a white man standing 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing 155 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and a light-colored jacket.
