SATURDAY’S STARS

Alex Birzer and Corey Nakatini won two races. Leading trainer Ron Moquett and Ingrid Mason also won two races. Birzer won the first race when he rode Dakota Fred to a 3-length victory over Delhaven, winning the 1 1/16-mile claiming race for 4-year-olds. His winning time was 1:46.26 and he paid $4.40, $3.20 and $2.80. Birzer won the third race when he rode Banner Bill to victory by a head over My Pal Paul in a 1-mile allowance race for 4-year-olds and up. Banner Bill won the race in 1:38.43 and paid $29.20, $15.00 and $8.80. This season, Birzer is fourth in the standings with eight victories in 57 starts.

Nakatani won the fifth race, riding Speightsong to a 1-length victory over Brewing in a 6-furlong claiming race. Speightsong’s winning time was 1:10.06 and he paid $5.00, $3.60 and $3.40. Nakatani won the ninth race when he rode Tisdale to a victory by a neck over That Makes Sense in a 1 and 1/16-mile maiden special weight race. Tisdale’s winning time was 1:46.97 and paid $12.40, $6.20 and $4.60. On the season, Nakatani is in second place in the jockey standings with 11 victories in 49 starts. Ricardo Santana Jr. won one race to increase his season-leading total to 15 victories in 82 starts.

Moquett, the leading trainer with nine victories in 41 starts, was the winning trainer in the sixth race, won by Pippin Ranger, ridden by Santana. Pippin Ranger won the 1 1/16-mile race for maiden 3-year-olds and up by three lengths over Miltee. Pippin Ranger paid $4.60, $2.80 and $2.40. Moquett was the winning trainer for Tisdale in the ninth race.

Mason won the fourth race when Great Way Lady, ridden by Quincy Hamilton won a 6-furlong race for 3-year-old maidens. Great Way Lady won by a length over More That Lily in 1:12.63. Great Way Lady paid $33.40, $14.60 and $8.40. Mason trained winner Marquee Miss in the Martha Washington Stakes. Mason has five victories in 23 starts.

FINAL FURLONG

Synchrony and Bird of Trey are preparing for the $500,000 Southwest Stakes on Feb. 15, a 3-year-old Kentucky Dery prep. Synchrony breezed 5 furlongs Saturday for trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel on a fast track in 1:00.80. The workout was the third for Synchrony, who finished third in the Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 18. “I wanted him to do something and he did,” Von Hemel said. “I was pleased.” … Birds of Trey worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.80 for trainer John Servis, who won the Southwest in 2004 with Smarty Jones. … Today’s seventh race, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies has drawn a full field of 12 with Moving Away drawing the third post for Von Hemel. Moving Away will be making her career debut under Luis Quinonez. … Sassy Miss Sue goes from 6 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles after finishing eighth in her carer debut Jan. 17. … Subtle Indian worked a half mile in 48.60 Saturday for trainer Robertino Diordoro, who hopes to use a claiming race on Feb. 15 at Oaklawn as a prep for the $100,000 Hot Springs Stakes for 4-year-olds and up on March 5. Subtle Indian was an allowance winner on Jan. 15 with Chris Landerso aboard. Subtle Indian also won the $100,000 Gazebo Stakes as a 3-yearold last year. … Pearl Turn is scheduled to make her final career start in the $100,000 Bayakoa Stakes on Feb. 14 before being bred to American Pharoah. Pearl Turn worked a half mile in :48.60 Saturday for trainer Will VanMeter.
