Winnipeg beats St. Louis in shootout

ST. LOUIS — Mark Scheifele scored in the fourth round for his first career shootout goal in four attempts, and the Winnipeg Jets beat the St. Louis Blues 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Bryan Little had his 16th goal in the opening minute of the second period for the Jets, who beat the Blues for just the second time in 15 games (2-11-2) since moving back to Winnipeg in 2011. Dustin Byfuglien had an assist a day after signing a $38 million, fiveyear contract extension with the Jets, who are 4-0-1 in their last five on the road.

Brian Elliott made 32 saves in regulation and overtime for the Blues, held to one goal or none in five of their last six games. Colton Parayko ended a 20-game goal drought in the second period.

Elliott’s glove save on Blake Wheeler was perhaps the top play of a scoreless first period, but the goalie couldn’t handle a high rebound and paid for it when Little had a tap-in to put the Jets in front 15 seconds into the second.

Parayko scored his seventh goal on a drive from near the blue line to tie it at 2:27 on a power play. Winnipeg was a whisker away from taking the lead midway through the third. Tyler Myers’ shot from the point deflected off Andrew Ladd and then ticked off the post, bounced flat just in front of the goal line and slid away.

St. Louis had a 4-1 shots advantage in overtime and buzzed the net at the end, although Connor Hellebuyck didn’t have to make a save.

Blues defensemen had to shoulder a heavier load in their first game without Alex Pietrangelo, out at least three weeks with a right knee injury. Pietrangelo is fourth in the NHL averaging 26:40 on the ice per game.

Dallas 4, Minnesota 3

ST. PAUL, Minn. — John Klingberg scored in overtime and Kari Lehtonen made 37 saves to win for the first time in more than a month and give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 victory Tuesday over Minnesota, the 10th loss in the last 11 games for the fading Wild.

Jamie Benn, who had two assists, set up Klingberg’s high shot from the slot that eluded Darcy Kuemper with 2:21 remaining in the extra period. Patrick Eaves added a goal and an assist and Tyler Seguin notched two assists for the Stars, who recovered well from a 5-1 loss Saturday at Chicago.

Kuemper stopped 26 shots for the Wild, who fell to a woeful 1-10 in the 3-on-3 overtime format this season. They’re 1-10-1 since a 2-1 win Jan. 9 at Dallas. Mikko Koivu’s power-play goal evened the game just 76 seconds into the third period, finishing a chaotic sequence in front of the net after Zach Parise and Matt Dumba each hit the post with their shots. Dumba was taken down by Stars defenseman Johnny Oduya, and as he lay face-first in the crease with his stick in the net, Koivu punched in the puck without it hitting Dumba’s hand. Replay review upheld the goal, and Stars coach Lindy Ruff didn’t challenge the ruling.

Washington 5, Nashville 3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Marcus Johansson had a goal and two assists to lead the Washington Capitals over the Nashville Predators 5-3 on Tuesday night. Tom Wilson and Justin Williams each had a goal and an assist, and Jason Chimera and Alex Ovechkin also scored. Braden Holtby made 23 saves for the Capitals, winners of four straight.

Filip Forsberg scored twice and Roman Josi had a goal for Nashville. The Predators have lost three of four since the All-Star break.

Chimera scored the game’s first goal at 12:02 of the opening period.

Predators captain Shea Weber had the puck inside the Nashville blue line, but his pass attempt was intercepted by Wilson. He carried the puck into the right faceoff circle and sent a pass in front to Chimera, who tipped it by goalie Pekka Rinne.

Washington is 27-1-0 when scoring first this season. The Predators carried the majority of the play in the first, outshooting the Capitals 14-6, but Holtby was sharp throughout.

He denied Cody Bass’ backhand attempt from in close at 2:11 and then made back-to-back saves on Weber and Ryan Johansen on a power play 2 minutes later. Holtby stopped Weber’s slap shot from the left point, then stuck his leg out and kicked away Johansen’s rebound attempt at what appeared to be an open net.

Vancouver 3, Colorado 1

DENVER — Bo Horvat had a goal and an assist, Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves and chipped in with an assist, and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Sven Baertschi and Matt Bartkowski also had goals for the Canucks, who stopped a four-game winless streak. Vancouver’s recent 0-3-1 stretch had dropped them to fifth in the Pacific Division.

Francois Beauchemin scored the lone goal for Colorado, and Semyon Varlamov had 25 saves while the Avalanche continued to scuffle on home ice, where they are 12-13-4.

The Avalanche couldn’t capitalize on three straight power plays and 57 seconds of 5-on-3 in the first, but took a 1-0 lead on Beauchemin’s seventh goal of the season at 2:26 of the second.
