Bentonville teenager Thomas Stringfellow has advanced again on American Idol as the selection of the top 10 and start of live competition draws closer in the show's final season.

Stringfellow, 17, performed a duet on Thursday night's episode with season 14 winner Nick Fradiani. The two sang a rendition of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror."

After the performance, the judges were critical of Stringfellow's version, saying it lacked in originality and didn't quite fit his style.

"Normally you do your own take on things, so I felt like I was watching you struggle a little bit with doing that version because it wasn't what you would normally do," Keith Urban said.

Jennifer Lopez said of the performance: "It just didn't feel quite right for you."

Referencing Stringfellow's Wednesday performance, Harry Connick Jr. said his rendition of "Creep" by Radiohead was strong enough for him to overlook the duet.

At the end of Thursday's episode, five contestants were eliminated from the singing competition after 12 contestants performed this week. Another five will go home at the end of next week after the remaining 12 perform.

Contestant La'Porsha Renae, 22, of McComb, Miss., who also auditioned in Little Rock last summer, was among those Thursday advancing to the next round of competition.

American Idol airs at 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox.
