U.S. road trips theme of new photo exhibit

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art will open its latest exhibition, The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip, to the public Saturday.

Included in the exhibition, which is the museum's largest exhibition focused on photography, are more than 100 images from 19 photographers. The featured work spans from the 1950s to the present and was organized by the Aperture Foundation.

The Open Road runs through May 30. It features photographs from Robert Frank, Ed Ruscha, Garry Winogrand, Inge Morath, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, Joel Meyerowitz, Jacob Holdt, Stephen Shore, Bernard Plossu, Victor Burgin, Joel Sternfeld, Alec Soth, Todd Hido, Shinya Fujiwara, Ryan McGinley, Justine Kurland, and Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs.

"We're really excited to have this exhibition here as our first full-scale photography exhibition," curatorial assistant Ali Demorotski said. "A lot of our visitors are coming to us while on a road trip. So what better pairing that that?"

U.S. landmarks, as well as iconic roadways like Route 66 and the Pacific Coast Highway, are featured as subject matter in the photographs. Also part of the exhibition is a digital slideshow of road-trip photos submitted by visitors. Crystal Bridges' staff also compiled a road-trip playlist on Spotify, a music-streaming service.

Admission is $10. People 18 and under and museum members will be admitted for free. Admission also will be free on Thursdays from 5-9 p.m.Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art will open its latest exhibition, The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip, to the public Saturday.
