Weather sets back $4.5M dam project

High water and cold weather have delayed work on the Bull Shoals dam and the lane closures on Arkansas 178 that the work required, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began work last month on a $4.5 million project to refurbish the dam's 17 gates. The work limited traffic to one lane on the section of Arkansas 178 that crosses the dam until last week, when the work and lane closure were halted.

The work will resume when the water level and weather allow, which may not be until mid-year, the department said. The work initially was expected to continue until the middle of 2017.
