Lines of thoroughbreds will thunder around the track as the 112th season of racing at Oaklawn, 2705 Central Ave., Hot Springs, gets underway Friday. The gates open at 11 a.m. and the first race is at 12:30 p.m. Regular post times are 1:30 p.m. weekdays and Sundays, 1 p.m. Saturdays, with most race days scheduled for Thursday-Sunday through the Arkansas Derby on April 16. Thirty singers from around the region, including three "locals" -- sopranos Kelly Singer and Rebekah McCallister and mezzo-soprano Katherine Overturf -- will be vying for a chance to move their operatic careers toward the top at the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions, 1 p.m. Saturday in the Stella Boyle Smith Recital Hall, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, 2801 S. University Ave. Winners advance to the Regional Auditions on Feb. 6 in Germantown, Tenn.; the national semifinals will be March 6 with the Grand Finals Concert on March 13 on the stage of the Met in New York. A cast of Arkansas musicians and singers will perform The Wiz Revised Live, a fully staged, with costumes, adaptation of the 1978 movie, 6 and 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Rev Room, 300 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center takes a look at and listens to all things jazz, 6 p.m. today. Organist Scott Dettra, director of music and organist at the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas, will give a concert at 8 p.m. Friday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Mississippi St., Little Rock, under the aegis of the Central Arkansas chapter, American Guild of Organists. His program will include the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C major, BWV 564; the Sonata V in C major, BWV 529; three chorale preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach; plus a concerto by George Frideric Handel; and a sonata by Felix Mendelssohn.
