RUSSELLVILLE -- The Pope County Farmers' Union is after the official heads of J. H. Fry of Atkins, state secretary of the union, and of Charles E. Scott, president of the Second District Agricultural school at Russellville. It is said charges against Mr. Fry grew out of the management of the co-operative store, gin and warehouse at Atkins. This concern, managed by Mr. Fry, recently went into the hands of a receiver.

• A news source disclosed today that property owners along a narrow strip connecting Maumelle Industrial Park to the city may withdraw their petition for annexation. A spokesman said the property owners are protesting because the petition calls only for the annexation of their property and not Maumelle itself. The owners believe that whoever purchases Maumelle should also have to pay property taxes.

• Recent flooding has affected more than just man -- thousands of deer in the state are on the move, searching for higher ground, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officials said Wednesday. G&FC officials are concerned because concentrations of deer can result in problems with poachers as the creatures forage for sparse food. "It's like killing fish in a barrel," said David Schimmel, district forester at Forrest City (St. Francis County). "People see 200-300 deer walking by, and (many) will kill more than one, to make up for years they didn't kill one."

MOUNTAIN HOME -- Calling the state's evidence "overwhelming," a judge Monday found Tammy and William Hanson guilty of 20 counts of cruelty to displaced pets on their land in northeast Baxter County. Baxter County District Judge Van Gearhart also barred the Hansons from owning or possessing any animals "anywhere in world" pending their sentencing hearing Feb. 23. "The court believes that the evidence is overwhelming that the defendants are guilty of 20 counts of abuse," Gearhart said. The Hansons were arrested Oct. 21 after sheriff's deputies executed a search warrant at their property and found more than 470 dogs in what authorities described as deplorable conditions. Authorities said many of the dogs were taken to Baxter County from the Gulf Coast after being separated from their owners during and after Hurricane Katrina.
