Baptist Prep rolls to 7th victory in row

Baptist Prep Coach Brian Ross has reasons to like his team right now.

Senior Brandon Vanover and freshman Issac McBride each scored 14 points as the Eagles rolled to a 55-34 home victory over 4A-4 rival Subiaco Academy on Saturday afternoon.

Baptist Prep (12-7, 7-0) took advantage of eight steals and held the Trojans to 11-for-39 (28 percent) shooting from the floor. The victory extends the Eagles' winning streak to seven games.

"It was a decent performance but there was a lack of intensity at times," said Ross, whose team committed only four turnovers in the first half but finished with 14. "Part of that is playing on Saturday and having the snow day (Friday). But overall, I thought we played good defense. I'm always happy with that."

Vanover did the majority of his damage in the first half as the Eagles built a 28-18 advantage. The 7-foot post player scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the first 16 minutes. He finished with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists.

McBride, a 5-10 point guard, scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half. The freshman, who comes off the bench, also had three rebounds and two assists.

"He is going to be special, really special," Ross said of McBride. "You forget sometimes he's a ninth-grader when you see some of the things he does. He's leading us in scoring from a guard position. The sky's the limit. He's just going to keep getting better and better and better."

Beau O'Neal gave Subiaco a 2-0 lead on its first possession, but Baptist Prep scored the next 11 points and the Trojans were never closer than five the rest of the way. Subiaco was guilty of 16 turnovers, and the Trojans (3-11, 1-6) made only 11 of 27 free-throw attempts.

"We have not shot the ball well," Subiaco Coach Tim Tencleve said. "A couple of weeks ago we shot 3 of 20 from the free-throw line and won the game. We're doing a lot of things pretty well, we're just not making shots."

Alex Walker led the Trojans with 10 points and nine rebounds. O'Neal finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Connor Vanover, a 7-2 sophomore, scored 9 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 6 shots for Baptist Prep, which was 20 of 44 from the floor and held a 34-31 advantage on the boards.
