1-49 work to affect Johnson roadway

Construction on Interstate 49 in Johnson will require overnight lane closures on Johnson Mill Boulevard beginning Wednesday night and lasting through Feb. 2, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Beginning Wednesday night, crews will be erecting structural steel girders and placing safety platforms for the widening of the I-49 overpass at Johnson Mill Boulevard. The eastbound and westbound lanes of Johnson Mill Boulevard will alternately be reduced to one lane between the east and west I-49 access ramp intersections as work progresses, the department said.

When the girders are being positioned over the roadway, traffic may be stopped in both directions for up to 15 minutes on Johnson Mill Boulevard. In addition, the double left turn on the I-49 southbound ramp will be reduced to one lane. Mainline traffic on I-49 will not be affected, the department said.

The lane closures take place from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night through Feb. 2, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using signs, flagmen and barrels.

The work is part of a $28.3 million project to widen I-49 from four lanes to six lanes between U.S. 71B in Johnson and U.S. 412 in Springdale, a distance of 4.5 miles. The project is part of the department's $1.8 billion Connecting Arkansas Program.
