LR Parkview's defense appeases coach

Little Rock Parkview's Al Flanigan says his team is not playing its best basketball at the moment, but even the veteran coach admits opposing teams are having a hard time scoring against the Patriots.

Junior forward Javon Franklin scored 16 points and sophomore guard Rod Terry hit two three-pointers in the opening minutes to propel the Patriots to a 60-30 victory over Sheridan in a 6A-South game at Ripley Arena.

"We're grinding them out," Flanigan said. "But as bad as we're playing at times, people are still not scoring (against us). We're holding them down, but I thought we were sluggish."

Parkview (16-2, 5-0) has allowed only 41 points a game during its six-game winning streak. On Tuesday, the Patriots came up with eight steals and allowed Sheridan only 32 field-goal attempts. Parkview outrebounded Sheridan 27-13.

Franklin grabbed 7 rebounds and made 4 steals to go along with his 16 points. Terry finished with 3 three-pointers and 13 points. Ryan Pippins and Curtis White each added nine points.

"Javon did a great job, and Pip played a little better than he has been," Flanigan said. "We did enough to win the game, and that was it."

Sheridan played only six players during the first three quarters and had only four players score. Junior Aron Theiss hit two three-pointers and finished with a team-high 16 points for the Yellowjackets (5-10, 0-5).

Sheridan hit 13 of 32 shots from the floor and did not attempt a free throw. Parkview was 22 of 41 from the floor.

"When we play teams like that, I tell our guys not to play down to the other team's level," Flanigan said. "We're trying to get better every game. We have to focus every time because no matter who we play, they're going to try to give you their best shot. We have to be ready to respond."
