Tiger, sharks part of Wie's doing nothing

Michelle Wie has remained busy during the LPGA offseason, both on and off the course.
Michelle Wie has remained busy during the LPGA offseason, both on and off the course.

Michelle Wie described her offseason as doing nothing.

Except for swimming with sharks. And getting some tips on her short game from Tiger Woods.

Wie said her swim with the sharks was a bucket-list item, though she was a little skeptical (and terrified) to learn there was no cage involved. Once she got in the water, she described it as a "peaceful" swim.

As for the golf work, Wie said Woods hosted a clinic at the Medalist Golf Club in South Florida, and because he can do little more than walk, he asked her to come along to hit some shots. Both are Nike clients. Both attended Stanford; Wie graduated. But she said she had not seen him for "like 14 years."

What was the short-game tip?

"A secret," she said. "But it was cool. We were just kind of talking about it and stuff. I mean, he has the best short game, besides Phil [Mickelson]. All the guys are good at short games. He has to be one of the best."

Social networking

Tom Anderson, the co-founder of the social networking site MySpace, has offered to pay the San Francisco Giants the entirety of Tim Lincecum's contract if they re-sign him.

Lincecum, a free agent, was a huge part of the Giants' rotation back in the late 2000s, winning back-to-back National League Cy Young Awards in 2008 and 2009, and has been a part of the team's three World Series titles since then.

However, with San Francisco signing Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija recently, there likely isn't any room left in the rotation. Coupled with the fact Lincecum, 31, is coming off a hip surgery, the Giants might have to pass on Anderson's generous offer.

You're hired!

From Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com:

"The San Francisco 49ers hired as their new defensive coordinator the Browns' Jim O'Neill. So no one told them Cleveland's only good defensive performance last year was against San Francisco?"

A real Patriot

The New England Patriots officially began their offseason Sunday night, but Joe Cardona is going right back to work.

The Patriots cleaned out their lockers Monday after their 20-18 AFC Championship game loss to the Denver Broncos, and for the long snapper, it also represented his transition back to full-time Navy duties. After being drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Cardona split his season between the NFL and the Navy.

"This year was great, being on the field," Cardona told The Boston Globe's Tim Healey. "I obviously have a higher priority than being here. It's different. It's important to me that I'm doing my job on both ends the best I can."

The Navy allowed Cardona to work one day per week at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, R.I., while he played for the Patriots, and it seems as though that will happen again in 2016. For now, he'll go to Norfolk, Va., for more training before reporting to his station in Bath, Maine, on the USS Zumwalt.

"I have a lot of support at high levels," Cardona said, per Healey. "So just like this year, working a schedule that everything comes together, I'll be able to make my requirements for each."
