UCA earns big SLC road victory

Central Arkansas broke Northwestern (La.) State’s nine-game home winning streak Wednesday with a 74-49 thumping at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, La.

UCA (17-2, 7-1 Southland) opened a 33-25 halftime lead over the Lady Demons (11-9, 5-4) before outscoring the hosts 26-11 in the third quarter to take a 59-36 advantage. The Sugar Bears led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter.

UCA shot 61.5 percent from the field in the first quarter and 63 percent for the game. The Sugar Bears hit 6 of 8 three-point attempts.

The victory tied UCA’s record for the largest margin in a Southland Conference road game and handed Northwestern State its worst home loss in 47 games. The Sugar Bears came into the game allowing a national-low 48.1 points per game defensively. The 49 points were 22 below the Lady Demons’ average at home.

It also was the first time the Sugar Bears have won 17 games before February and just the third time overall.

UCA’s Maggie Proffitt hit both of her three-point attempts on her way to a team-high 14 points. Taylor Baudoin had 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Kendara Watts added 12 points for the Sugar Bears.

Northwestern State was led by Beatrice Attura’s 17 points and Janelle Perez’s 12.
