Where I live: the Central High School Neighborhood Historic District

Occupation: school guidance counselor by day, amateur home renovator by night/weekend/summer

My favorite space is: the entryway of the 108-year-old house that I share with my husband, John Steel.

Why? The original woodwork in the space, consisting of paneling, spindles and a pair of built-in storage benches under large, north-facing windows, is what initially drew me to the property. There's a level of craftsmanship that sets the tone for the rest of the structure, and when a wall is opened, it does not disappoint. The studs are true-to-size two-by-four rough-hewn solid oak! As the entryway is currently the most finished of all the rooms, and it's like a light at the end of a dark tunnel! I love the feeling of walking through the front door and being reminded that someday soon, the other rooms in my home will be without piles of things displaced, drywall dust, and random paint sampling on the wall, just like the entryway.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: The chandelier in the entryway should be centered on the symmetrically placed architectural features of the room, not the overall measurement of the room. It's such a tiny detail ... but still.

Its days are numbered!
