MAGANDANG ARAW (BEAUTIFUL DAY)

Philippine association fiesta dishes up food, fun with flair

Lumpia. Paella. Talong. Leche flan. Such names are common when it comes to the cuisine of the Philippines.

Attendees got their fill of their native fare at the Arkansas Philippine Association's second annual Pistang Pilipino, a potluck picnic held June 25 in Pavilion 2 of Maumelle Park in Little Rock. The event drew more than 300 association members and guests who brought donations of nonperishable food to give to a charitable organization.

The event kicked off with a parade that featured the Reyna Elena (Miss APA) Lerry Luistro, along with the first and second runners-up and child pageant winners. The parade also included the association majorettes, a mini-Santa Cruzan procession and dancers. Cris Balleza Jr., chairman of the association board, offered remarks prior to what seemed like a never-ending feast of various Filipino dishes highlighted by lechon (roasted suckling pig) and served alongside the pavilion. In addition, ice cream treats were sold out of a Filipino-style peddler's pushcart.

The program continued, talent-show style, inside the pavilion with Nelia Chambers and Melinda Felicitas as masters of ceremonies. Vocal numbers were performed by individuals and groups, including the APA Singing Group and the Singing Telegrams. The association's Dance Group performed the lively "Kalapati" (Dove Dance), while the Junior Dance Group performed "Magtanim ay Di Biro" (Planting Rice). The South Pacific Dance Group of Russellville also performed. Door prizes were given between performances.

The picnic continued with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to volunteers, along with games.
