Initiative has $1M for music majors

FAYETTEVILLE -- Ten scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded to incoming music majors at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville this fall.

Money for the initiative comes from leftover private funds supporting band scholarships, according to the announcement from UA. About 350 students participating in UA bands already receive scholarships of varying amounts.

"Our hope is that by creating these scholarships we'll be able to empower and encourage some of the finest musicians in our state," Todd Shields, dean of UA's J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, said in a statement.
