Council schedule splaza discussion

The North Little Rock City Council will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. today to discuss plans for a downtown plaza, Mayor Joe Smith announced.

The city-owned Argenta Plaza area, set on a 0.66-acre empty lot at 510 Main St., is envisioned to become a smaller version of Fort Worth's Sundance Square Plaza, part of a larger entertainment and shopping venue, Smith has said.

Sundance Square officials have invited Smith for a guided tour and "working dinner" Aug. 1. Smith is inviting business and community leaders to join him and City Council members and staff for the planned one-night trip, he said. More details and a presentation on the plaza will come at today's meeting, he said.

Smith, city Aldermen Maurice Taylor and Debi Ross, and some of the mayor's staff members visited Sundance Square in April 2015. It is one of four sites Smith has visited for ideas.

"We'll bring everybody up to date on the plaza," Smith said of Thursday's meeting. "It's time to bring it [a concept] to the masses and to the Council."

In a letter to community and business leaders, Smith also said single-family and multifamily development projects "are imminent" for construction on property of the former Prime Quality Feeds mill adjacent to the plaza area.

The City Council approved in March putting a hold on the sale of city property next to the plaza area and the Rock Region Metro trolley barn at Main Street and Bishop Lindsey Avenue so that a plan could be conceived by development partners Lawrence Finn and Robert Hardin. Finn is chief executive officer of The Village at Hendrix in Conway.

Pet sterilizations available for $20

The offer only applies to North Little Rock residents or those in unincorporated areas of Pulaski County. The price will be in effect as long as finances allow it, according to an announcement of the program.

There are 15 youths participating, camp Director Lorea Grant Eubanks said. Student artworks will include paintings, sculpture, fused glass, string art and mosaic art, she said.
