Initiative to shorten Arkansas legislators' term limits falls short of needed signatures

Arkansas voters will not get to decide on a proposed amendment to restore shorter term limits for state lawmakers because not enough signatures were gathered to get the question on the ballot.

Restore Term Limits, the group pushing the ballot proposal, said Thursday it had obtained more than 50,00 signatures, short of the 85,000 needed by the Friday deadline.

The initiative would have shortened term limits to six years for state representatives and eight years for senators, with a total limit of 10 years for lawmakers, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

Those were the terms limits in place before voters passed Amendment 94 in 2014, which set the limit for both offices at 16 years.

Restore Term Limits contends that the Arkansas Elected Officials Ethics, Transparency and Financial Reform Amendment "tricked" voters with its naming.
