Governor drives agenda during Good Roads Foundation luncheon

The Good Roads Foundation hosted its largest meeting to date July 30 with about 170 guests attending the group's Summer Luncheon at the Arkansas Governor's Mansion. Gov. Asa Hutchinson was the guest speaker.

Hutchinson went over details of a highway funding plan recently approved by the state Legislature. But, he said, there's a need for a good, long-term solution and encouraged the foundation to lead the discussion and build a consensus.

"We accomplish the most when we work together," the governor said.

Also speaking at the luncheon were Clinton School of Public Service student Nathan Watson and Shannon Newton, president of the Arkansas Trucking Association. Watson's Clinton capstone project was a study of the economic impact of highway spending and funding in Arkansas.

The nonprofit foundation promotes funding for the planning, development, construction and maintenance of Arkansas' roads, highways and bridges, which facilitate economic growth. The foundation board of directors includes representatives from the 10 Arkansas Highway Commission districts. Jim Wooten of Beebe serves as the board president.

Attendees included many county judges, county officials, state legislators and the members of the Arkansas State Highway Commission.
