A SKY'S EYE VIEW

Science After Dark flies into the unknown skies

The Museum of Discovery provided an out-of-world experience the night of June 30 as the museum hosted a UFO-themed Science After Dark. The adult-only crowd took in the regular science exhibits, pizza and beer and a variety of interactive and informative exhibits.

Guests created flying saucers from recycled materials and tested their flying ability in a vertical air tube, skimmed across the floor on a hoverboard made possible with dry ice and wood (as well as a signed release of liability) and maneuvered a spacecraft through a series of rings using air power.

Brian Irby with the Arkansas State Archives spoke about the first reported UFO in Arkansas, in April 1887. The Arkansas chapter of MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network, had a table set up with information about the organization, which investigates UFO sightings. Ozark Mountain Publishing had books for sale, along with information on next year's 30th annual Ozark Mountain UFO Conference in April.

The Museum of Discovery, an interactive science and technology center, hosts Science After Dark each month, usually the last Thursday. It's best to check the museum's website, museumofdiscovery.org, for dates. The subject for July's grown-up event is Cryptozoology, the study of animals that may, or may not, exist. Guests must be 21 to attend.
