Ball Plastic Storage Caps
Ball Plastic Storage Caps

Sure we use canning jars for canning and preserving our favorite foods, but more often than not we reach for canning jars for storing dry goods like grains and beans, spice blends, leftovers, nonfood items like buttons and thumb tacks, and making salad dressings (just combine the ingredients, screw on the lid and shake).

But once the seal is broken, canning lids and screw bands do a poor job of making a jar airtight, so leaks are always possible. And if the screw bands are not thoroughly dried after washing or used for a long period of time on an opened jar, they tend to rust.

The solution? Ball Plastic Storage Caps. The BPA-free lids -- available for standard and wide-mouth jars -- are reusable, recyclable and can be used with freezer-safe jars. The lids are not for canning use, but once a canned jar has been opened, they are the ideal way to keep the contents fresh. The lids do need to be screwed on tightly to prevent leaks, as we learned the hard way. Dishwasher safe.
